Kol Nidrei: Music With Jewish Roots and Universal Appeal
Despite his Protestant faith, Max Bruch had a lifelong appreciation for Jewish beliefs and culture, and his music often drew on these traditions.
Drawing on two traditional Hebrew melodies– a liturgical song from Yom Kippur and "Those That Wept on Babel's Stream"– Kol Nidrei is among the most beautifully evocative works ever composed for cello and orchestra. By turns dramatic and richly melodic, this moving music has been stirring the souls of audiences for nearly 150 years.
